description Although its appearance varies over its large range, it is often easily identifiable because of the pretty, bright yellow or gold speckling present on the dark carapace and skin of many of the juveniles and adults.

natural habitats Semi-aquatic;

Shallow wetlands including sedge meadows adjoining cattail marshes, and wet dolomite prairies, marshy meadows, bogs, swamps, small ponds, ditches
aquarium Land area is necessary. In water area, preferablly with a lot of aquatic plants. Water should be no deeper than 24" -- It is poor swimmer, can drown.
substrate Soil, mud, gravel, barks (e.g. Repti Bark, Coconut Bark)
activity period Daytime (diurnal);
12 - 14 hours each day with direct natural sunlight or UV lamp (e.g. ReptiSun 5.0, UV Heat Bulb)
temperature 28 - 29 ¢XC -- basking spot   (e.g. Basking Spot Lamp)
21 - 24 ¢XC -- cooler area   (e.g. Daylight Blue Bulb)
