general
description It makes hardy captives. One of the oddest of all tortoises, it has a flat shell, soft plastron, and habit of fleeing rather than withdrawing into its shell when disturbed. It is an excellent climber and make its home under rocks.

adult size approx. 6" carapax length ; 1 lbs.
sexing Mature males have much longer and thicker tails than females. Additionally, males tend to be smaller than the females, and the rayed pattern on their scutes less distinct.

natural habitats Terrestrial, sociable; rocky hillsides (kopjes)
cage Cage should be large enough. (e.g. Wooden Terrarium, Glass Terrarium) Provide a lot of layers of rocks for climbing and hiding.
substrate Gravel, sand (e.g. Repti Sand, Calci-Sand), compressed paper granules (e.g. Good Mews)
activity period Daytime (diurnal);
12 - 14 hours each day with direct natural sunlight or UV lamp (e.g. ReptiSun 5.0, UV Heat Bulb)
